February 2012 - Freelancing, Agile, and beers.

This months theme: Time management.

When you think about what most software development is at the end of the day, it is a lot of time management. As developers we could spend hours, days, weeks on the same problem refactoring, refining, and polishing. This approach is great for pet projects and our personal interests, but usually doesn't go over so well on the commercial landscape. We hope that the talks we have lined up for February can help bring some perspective on how to handle projects, set expectations, adjust to change, and deliver high quality software quickly.

Wayne Witzel III, Senior Software Engineer, Geek.net will be giving the talk, "Python Freelancer a Retrospective". - This talk covers where and how to find work, tools used to manage client expectations, and the perks and pitfalls you should be aware of before setting off to become a freelancer on your own. Though the language base is Python, this talk is language agnostic.

James Kies, CoFounder, 10-Geek.com will be giving the talk, "Changing the world of work with Agile Lean and Scrum" - This talk covers Agile Lean and Scrum and talks about practical applications and how it can be used in a rapidly changing startup / consulting environment to achieve hyper productivity and gain happy clients.

After the meeting there will be an announcement of this months secondary meeting location for food/drinks for those interested. The after meeting event allows everyone to talk, debate, and network.

Seems like everyone forgot about the meeting because of the holiday. You all missed out some great presentations and conversations, oh and on free publix sandwiches and drinks.

Thanks James and Wayne for putting together those awesome presentations. I hadn't thought about applying agile principles outside of software development before, and as a newly minted contractor Wayne's presentation was extremely helpful. In fact, I'd really appreciate if you could post your presentations, I'd like to review them again and share with some of my friends. Thanks again for putting this meetup together, I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!

Sorry I was late to your talk, James. Thanks to you and Wayne for presenting.

This was my first time at the CIED center. It is a nice facility.
